TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Minister of Investment and the Chief of Investment Coordinating Board (BKPM) Bahlil Lahadalia in a public forum on Wednesday assured that Tesla would invest in Indonesia this year, as a follow-up of the meeting between President Joko Widodo, or Jokowi, and Tesla founder and CEO Elon Musk.
Bahlil claimed Tesla was interested to invest in the electric vehicle (EV) battery ecosystem and would build the facility in Batang, Central Java. However, the Minister remained tight-lipped regarding the actual value of the investment, Antaranews reported.
“When will it be realized? Inshallah (God willing) in 2022 but I am unable to disclose the exact month. We’ll just wait for it as no deals have been signed. The investment value is also classified,” said the Minister in the Road to G20: Investment Forum on May 18, “But this is a good product, a major one.”
President Jokowi met with tycoon Elon Musk during the President’s visit to the U.S. last week. The two men met at Musk’s SpaceX headquarters in Texas.
The Minister also said that both he and the Coordinating Minister for Maritime Affairs and Investment, Luhut Binsar Pandjaitan, were tasked by Jokowi to approach Foxconn and Tesla.
