TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) monitored cyclonic rotation in central Kalimantan which could affect today's weather, May 17, 2022, as it formed a convergence area extending from East Kalimantan to Central Kalimantan.
The convergence area was also observed extending from South Sumatra to Riau, from the western Java Sea to the Karimata Strait, in the southern waters of South Kalimantan-Central Kalimantan, in West Kalimantan, and in Central Sulawesi. This could highly increase the potential for rain cloud growth around and along the convergence area.
Thus, the agency forecasted that Banjarmasin will be hit by rain accompanied by lightning today. Besides, moderate rains are likely to occur in Mataram, Makassar and Medan. Meanwhile, light rain will shower Denpasar, Palangka Raya, Samarinda, Tarakan, Tanjung Pinang, Manokwari, Pekanbaru, Kendari, and Manado.
The air temperature throughout the country was estimated at around 20-34 degrees Celsius with the lowest in Bandung and the highest in Jakarta, Surabaya, Bandar Lampung, and Palembang.
BMKG also mapped wind patterns in the northern part of Indonesia which dominantly moved from east to south areas with wind speeds ranging from 5-25 knots. The highest wind speed was observed in the southern Makassar Strait, Banda Sea, southern waters of Kupang-Rote, and Arafuru Sea.
High waves of 2.5-4.0 meters also potentially occur in many waters, including the western and southern parts of the Sunda Strait. The BMKG further outlined that other high wave might happen in the southern waters of Banten to Sumbawa, the northern waters of Sabang, the western waters of Aceh, the western waters of Simeulue Island to Lampung, the southern part of the Bali-Lombok-Alas Strait, and the southern Indian Ocean from Banten to NTB.
