TEMPO.CO, JakartaThe Labor Party announced that more than 50,000 workers will take part in the commemoration of International Labor Day or May Day which will be held on Saturday, May 14, 2022. A demonstration before the Parliament building, Central Jakarta, will start the event.

“There will be more than 50,000 workers who will attend this,” said Labor Party chairman Said Iqbal during a virtual press conference, Friday, May 13, 2022.

Iqbal confirmed that the rally will be held from 10:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. Jakarta time. Workers will voice 18 demands, including the revocation of the Job Creation Law.

They will then march to the Gelora Bung Karno Stadium for a May Day Fiesta. The event will be filled with speeches from the Indonesian Labor Movement, which consists of a number of labor unions and farmers' unions.

Other than workers, Iqbal added that the event will also be attended by representatives of honorary teachers, migrant workers, fishermen's unions, and women's activists.

According to him, the initial number of would-be participants amounted to 100,000 but was cut given the COVID-19 pandemic.

Iqbal also said that May Day celebrations will be held simultaneously in a number of cities across the archipelago. Among them are 20,000 workers in Surabaya, 5,000 workers in Semarang, 15,000 workers in Batam, 5,000 workers in Medan, and 10,000 other workers in other industrial cities.
