7 Cities with Highest Living Cost in Indonesia

TEMPO.CO, JakartaThe living cost in one city to another in Indonesia is quite diverse as it is influenced by various factors, ranging from regional economic development, and tourist interest, to the lifestyle of the residents.

In general, the higher the level of economic growth, the higher will be the prices of basic needs in an area. A survey is needed to be conducted every five years to find out the people’s living standards in an area.

Referring to the Statistics Indonesia (BPS) website, here are the seven most expensive cities in Indonesia in 2018 based on the average expenditure per capita:

  1. Jakarta

As the country's capital, it is unsurprising that Jakarta is the first city with the highest living cost in the archipelago. Jakarta residents averagely spent Rp4,446,770 per month. Meanwhile, the total average household expenditure amounted to Rp16,897,727.

  1. Surabaya

The second-largest metropolitan city in Indonesia, Surabaya of East Java, is in second place after Jakarta with an average expenditure per capita of Rp4,240,902 and the household expenditure of Rp16,115,429.

  1. Bekasi

Included in Jakarta Greater Area or Jabodetabek, Bekasi is on the list of the seven most expensive cities in Indonesia. The average monthly expenses per resident reached Rp4,119,168, while per household up to Rp16,888,582.

  1. Depok

Depok is also in the Jakarta Greater Area as it is directly adjacent to the capital. Its average population has jobs in Jakarta. The average total expenditure per capita of the resident was Rp3,424,560 and of the household at Rp13,355,784.

  1. Semarang

Semarang is the city with the highest living cost in Central Java Province. The resident spent Rp3,257,315 per month on average. The households, meanwhile, on averagely spent Rp13,680,725 per month.

  1. Tangerang

Similar to Depok, Tangerang is directly adjacent to Jakarta. The largest city in Banten Province logged the average expenditure of its population at Rp3,287,159 per month, while of households at Rp12,491,204.

  1. Makassar

Makassar is the city with the highest living cost outside Java. The capital of South Sulawesi is one of the metropolitan cities with an average total per capita expenditure of Rp3,253,338 and an average total household expenditure of Rp14,640,002.
