TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Home Affairs Minister Tito Karnavian said he would hand over the names of three candidates to replace Jakarta Governor Anies Baswedan to President Joko Jokowi Widodo in September or a month before the inauguration.
“The names will be submitted to the President in September. The inauguration will be in October,” said Tito in his office, Thursday, May 12, 2022.
According to him, the ministry is still collecting suggestions related to candidates. “As for the criteria [of the candidates], they must be a high-ranking official at echelon one. At present, we are still in the stage of receiving input. We are conducting profiling on whether the person has a problem or not and potentially has an issue or not,” Tito explained.
To date, two names have become the public spotlight as they are predicted to be candidates replacing Anies. They are Head of the Presidential Secretariat Heru Budi Hartono and Jakarta Regional Secretary Marullah Matali. However, the Home Affairs Ministry ensured that the candidate names are still being discussed.
Other than Anies, there are six governors whose terms of office expire this year. The positions will temporarily be replaced by acting governors since the simultaneous regional head election is slated to take place in 2024.
The acting governors for each region will be sworn in in the same month as the end of the definitive governor's term of office. Five of them have been sworn in today. Meanwhile, Anies Baswedan’s term of office will end on October 16, 2022.
