TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Food and Drug Monitoring Agency (BPOM) has officially allowed Kinder products to be redistributed after they were tested negative for containing Salmonella. The agency had temporarily banned the three chocolate brand products registered in Indonesia since April 11, 2022.
“The results of the BPOM's laboratory test showed that the three products were negative for Salmonella contamination,” wrote the agency in its official announcement published via the official page pom.go.id on Thursday, April 28.
The test was carried out on random samples of Kinder Joy, Kinder Joy for Boys, and Kinder Joy for Girls registered and circulated in the archipelago.
The ban on the product's circulation was based on the food alert issued by the UK's Food Standard Agency (FSA) on April 2, 2022, which was followed by a number of European countries, including Ireland, France, Germany, the Netherlands, and Sweden.
The Kinder products were suspected to be contaminated with non-typhoid Salmonella which might cause mild symptoms such as diarrhea, fever, and stomach cramps. There were reportedly 63 children who fell victims and no death toll.
Additionally, the International Food Safety Authorities Network Global Alert (INFOSAN) confirmed on April 10, 2022, that the popular chocolate products produced in Belgium which were recalled were distributed in 77 countries, excluding Indonesia.
“All Kinder chocolate products that are recalled abroad are not registered with the BPOM,” the agency announced.
Therefore, BPOM allowed Kinder products to be redistributed immediately after the issuance was released based on the risk analysis results on the safety of the chocolate products.
