Fadli Zon Joins IPU Task Force To Help End Russia-Ukraine War

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Chief of the House of Representatives (DPR) inter-parliamentary cooperation body Fadli Zon has become a member of the Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU) task force. The task force is tasked to find a resolution to the military aggression between Russia and Ukraine. The task force had held its first session on April 25, 2022.
"The world must work together to push for a political resolution to the war between Russia and Ukraine," said Fadli in a written statement on Thursday, April 28, 2022, which was initially voiced in the task force's first session.
Fadli strongly believed that a political resolution is needed to prevent the current military resolution are not used to spark a larger war utilizing nuclear, which will effectively be the third world war.
Fadli explained that the task force was formed at the initiative of BKSAP at the 144th IPU general assembly in Nusa Dua, Bali, at the end of March. Indonesia is also the only Asia Pacific country that is a member of the Task Force.
This task force itself consists of eight people representing six Geopolitical Groups. South Africa and Namibia as representatives of the African group. The United Arab Emirates represents the Arab group. Indonesia represents the Asia Pacific group,
Kazakhstan represents the Eurasian group. Uruguay is a representative of the Latin America and Caribbean groups. Lastly, the Netherlands and Israel as representatives of the Twelve Plus group covering the Western European region.
Fadli Zon said that the Task Force must be able to gain the trust of Russia and Ukraine. Therefore, tripartite talks between the Task Force and the Russian and Ukrainian Parliament could result in a meaningful agreement.
As the proponent of the formation of the Task Force, Fadli Zon also said that the Task Force must be impartial and neutral. The goal is that the Task Force can work objectively to end wars, de-escalate conflicts, open humanitarian corridors, and reach peace agreements.
