TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - A 5.7-magnitude earthquake jolted Papua today morning, April 25, at 06:50:33 Western Indonesian Time (WIB). The Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) updated the magnitude to 5.4.
The quake’s epicenter was located on land at 3.79 degrees South Latitude and 140.52 degrees East Longitude, or Senggi area, Keerom, at a depth of 66 kilometers.
Head of the BMKG’s quake and tsunami center, Bambang Setiyo Prayitno, said it was an intermediate quake triggered by deformation of the continental crust under the Jaya Wijaya Fold and Thrust Belt.
“The results of the analysis of the source mechanism show that the quake occurred in an oblique-thrust movement mechanism,” explained Bambang in his statement, Monday.
The tremor was felt quite strongly in Jayapura and Keerom at an intensity scale of III-IV MMI and in Wamena at MMI II scale. In addition, the modeling results showed that it did not have the potential for a tsunami.
As of 07:20 WIB, the BMKG did record any aftershock activity. Local residents are asked to remain calm, not be provoked by baseless issues, and avoid cracked buildings damaged by the quake.
