TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Indonesian Health Ministry stated that the new sub-variants of Covid-19 known as XE, XD and XF have been detected globally. These sub-variants are of the Omicron variant.
"Until today, either XE, XD, or XF sub-variant have yet been found in Indonesia," said the ministry's Covid task force spokesperson Siti Nadia Tarmizi in a written statement on Friday, April 15.
Siti explained that XE is a combination of BA.1 and BA.2 genetic subvariants. This sub-variant was first detected from specimens on January 19 in Britain. "There have been 763 cases of XE found there," she said.
XE is reportedly to be more highly transmissive than the BA.2 sub-variant. However, there is not enough epidemiological evidence to show changes in society.
Meanwhile, XD and XF sub-variants are the combination of Delta AY.4 and Omicron BA.1 variants. XF cases have been found in Britain but in a small number.
Siti said that until today, there is no significant difference in special symptoms of the three. However, everyone is asked to remain alert as the transmission is reportedly to be quicker than the Omicron variant.
