TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Residents of Chernihiv, a city in Ukraine, must try to survive without electricity, water, and gas supplies ever since Russian forces besieged the city in a full-on military aggression at the end of February.
Chernihiv is geographically in the northern part of Ukraine which is directly at the borders with one of Russia’s closest allies Belarus.
Irina Samoilenko (30) told Tempo how electricity, water, and gas supplies are yet to be restored despite the fact that the town has been taken back by the Ukrainian military since early April.
"We cook with a wood stove," said Samoilenko on April 12.
She recalled city administrators calling for residents to remain calm as the government is attempting to restore the gas, water, and electricity supply. Residents are now permitted to go shopping for daily needs at supermarkets.
However, supermarkets have imposed limits on the number of visitors and items that can be bought on a daily basis, such as bread and pasta. "The queue at ATM machines is long as supermarkets do not accept debit card payments and only cash," said Irina.
Tempo journalist Raymandus Rikang observed this firsthand after roaming Chernihiv city for minutes and witnessed ATMs with rows of queues of local residents.
