TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - State-owned oil and gas giant Pertamina said fuel prices in Indonesia are among the cheapest in the Asian region albeit the recently increased prices of Pertamax and Dex gasoline.
“If we compare the average fuel prices in Asia, the price of fuel in Indonesia is still the lowest. Malaysia indeed has lower fuel prices than Indonesia but it is because of differences in the subsidy value,” said Vice President of Pertamina Corporate Communications, Fajriyah Usman, in a press release received by Tempo, Monday, April 11.
She explained the average price of fuel in the neighboring countries is much higher than in Indonesia at Rp16,500 per liter. For example, Singapore has the average fuel price at Rp30,208 per liter, Laos at Rp24,767 per liter; the Philippines at Rp20,828 per liter; Cambodia at Rp20,521 per liter; Thailand at Rp19,767 per liter; and Vietnam at Rp18,647 per liter.
The low prices of Pertalite and Biosolar, she argued, were attributable to the subsidies provided by the government for Biosolar and Pertalite gasoline, which are mostly consumed by the public or at 83 percent of the total sales of all Pertamina’s retail fuels.
In detail, the government provided a subsidy of Rp7,800 per liter of Biosolar, 150 percent higher than the selling price of Rp5,150. Meanwhile, the subsidy for Pertalite amounted to Rp4,000-4,500 per liter, or more than 50 percent of the selling price of Rp7,650.
Earlier this month, Pertamina decided to increase the price of Pertamax fuel from Rp9,000 to Rp12,000 following the surge in global oil prices. Meanwhile, the price of Pertamina Dex rose from Rp13,200 per liter to Rp13,700 per liter.
