TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - National Police (Polri) Chief Gen. Listyo Sigit Prabowo on Monday said he has instructed police personnel in the field to secure the mass protest held by university students by putting forth a humanistic approach.
He added that police personnel will guarantee the rights of Indonesian citizens in voicing their opinions as overseen by Law No.9/1998, and that law enforcement officers will adhere to the country’s law on freedom of expression and opinion.
“A humanistic approach must continue to be implemented in guarding demonstrations,” he said on Monday, April 11.
However, he underscored the police will still carry out their duties in providing security and public order. Therefore, Listyo Sigit hopes the April 11 demonstration will also respect the people who are fasting amid Ramadan.
"Moreover, because this is the Ramadan month, we still have to pay attention to the purity and solemnity of Muslims who are fasting," he said.
The National Police Head of the Public Relations Division, Insp. Gen. Dedi Prasetyo, added that the security personnel for today's student protest only came from the Polda Metro Jaya.
