5.6 M Earthquake Jolts Aceh's Sabang Today Afternoon

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - An earthquake with a magnitude of 5.6 rocked Sabang, Aceh, Wednesday, April 6, at 12:29:45 WIB (Western Indonesian Time). Its epicenter was recorded at sea, 7.39 degrees north latitude and 94.51 degrees east longitude, or 188 kilometers northwest of Sabang.
According to the head of the quake and tsunami center of the Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics Agency (BMKG), Bambang Setiyo Prayitno, the magnitude was updated to 5.5 at a depth of 25 kilometers.
“It is categorized as a shallow quake due to active fault activity. The analysis of the source mechanism shows that it occurs on strike-slip faults,” said Bambang in a statement, Wednesday.
The tremor was felt in the Sukakarya area of Sabang City and Pulo Aceh area of Aceh Besar at scale III of the Modified Mercalli Intensity (MMI).
Until now, there have been no reports of damage caused by the quake which had no potential to trigger a tsunami. Bambang also said that as of 13:10 WIB, the BMKG also did not detect any aftershock.
Earlier today at 10:03 WIB, a tectonic earthquake measuring 4.9 magnitudes hit Gunungkidul, Yogyakarta. The tremor even reached Pacitan of East Java.
