Indonesia to Build Formula 1 Circuit in Bintan of Riau Islands

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Indonesian Motor Association (IMI) chairman Bambang Soesatyo or Bamsoet revealed that Indonesia will build Formula 1 (F1) circuit located in Lagoi Bintan, Riau Islands Province. The groundbreaking ceremony is planned to be held on Thursday, March 17.

According to him, it will be the grandest circuit in western Indonesia. The team is still finalizing the Detail Engineering Design (DED) related to the technical soil and natural conditions at the construction site.

“The DED of the Bintan F1 international circuit is the same as the Mandalika Circuit concept which emphasizes natural scenery. It is designed to offer a beautiful view of Bintan sea,” said Bamsoet in his official statement, as quoted by Tempo today, March 15.

Bamsoet, who also serves as Chairman of the People's Consultative Assembly (MPR), explained that the new circuit will stand on a 75 to 100-hectare area. The design is studied by an  England-based global architectural design firm, Populous, which is renowned for designing motorsport arenas in various countries around the globe.

“We have prepared two areas for the circuit: near Lagoi Bay and behind the long sand beach,” he added.

Other than for F1 car racing events, the Bintan international circuit can also be used for sports car racing up to MotoGP. “The construction of this circuit will have a major impact on economic growth and local revenue for the Bintan region, along with the influx of local and foreign tourists from Singapore, Malaysia, and other countries,” Bamsoet said.
