LSI Survey: Majority Says President Jokowi's Term Must End in 2024

4 March 2022 08:00 WIB

TEMPO.CO, JakartaA recent poll by the Indonesian Survey Institute (LSI) revealed that the majority of people rejected the request to extend the term of office of President Joko "Jokowi" Widodo until 2027 for any reason.

“According to the majority, President Joko Widodo's term of office must end in 2024 as in line with the constitution,” said LSI Director Djayadi Hanan on Thursday, March 3.

Djayadi detailed that around 68-71 percent of participants objected to the presidential term being extended either due to the COVID-19 pandemic, economic recovery in the wake of the pandemic, or the construction of a new capital city.

“The majority (64 percent) also agree that the change of national leadership through the 2024 General Elections must still be held even though the pandemic is still lingering, rather than having to be postponed on the basis of the national economic recovery caused by the pandemic (26.9 percent),” he explained.

The LSI survey was held from February 25 to March 1 involving 1,197 respondents interviewed via phone calls. With a simple random sampling method, the margin of error was claimed at 2.89 percent and the confidence level was at 95 percent. The sample came from all provinces which were proportionally distributed, representing 71 percent of the national voting population.

The survey results also found that people's satisfaction with the president's performance was not correlated with the objection or acceptance of the extension of the president's office term.

The majority at 66.3 percent were quite or very satisfied with President Jokowi's performance and 29.9 percent were less or not satisfied at all. But most of those who expressed satisfaction, around 60 percent or above, said they did not agree with the extension of the president’s term.

“So, people who are satisfied or dissatisfied with the president's performance have the same opinion that they refuse the president's term of office to be extended until 2027,” Djayadi concluded.
