TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Indonesian House of Representatives (DPR RI) officially passed the Sports Bill replacing Law Number 3/2005 concerning National Sports System on Tuesday.

The bill was approved by 331 participants, present in person and virtually, during a plenary session of the House at the Parliament Complex, Jakarta.

The deputy chair of Commission X of DPR RI as well as the chair of the working committee of the bill, Dede Yusuf, informed that the committee had completed discussions on the bill in three sessions.

A number of major issues were discussed, including the scope of technology-based sports, the status of athletics as a profession, the disbursal of social security, and rewards for athletes, he said.

The other major issues included the distribution of funds for sports development, improvement of Indonesian anti-doping associations, as well as supporter management, he added.

Meanwhile, minor issues discussed regarding the bill were the implementation of National Sports Grand Design (DBON), sports coaches, and the authority and responsibility of central and local governments in sports, he said.

In addition, sporting facilities and infrastructure, sports for persons with disabilities, as well as the naturalization of athletes were also touched upon, he added.

“In drafting the bill, the working committee held its own internal discussions, meetings with the government, as well as public hearings with experts and various sports stakeholders," the deputy chair said in a press release issued by the Youth and Sports Ministry.

Meanwhile, Youth and Sports Minister Zainudin Amali said the new regulation would provide legal certainty to central and regional governments in promoting sports activities, for both recreational and achievement sports.

"Hopefully, the attempts to revive sports culture among the community and the efforts to improve national sports achievements can advance Indonesia at the international level, in accordance with the goals of sustainable national development," he added.
