TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Indonesia decided to withdraw its national under-23 football team from the ASEAN Football Federation or AFF U-23 Championship 2022. The Football Association of Indonesia (PSSI) announced today, Feb. 11, via its official website that the withdrawal was caused by COVID-19 infections and injuries.
Of the 29 players chosen by coach Shin Tae-yong, seven players tested positive for the coronavirus disease, four others were categorized as people with suspected COVID-19, and three players suffered injuries.
“With deep regret, we have to cancel Indonesia's participation in the AFF U-23 Cup for the reasons above. We apologize to all parties because this situation is beyond our control. We are now focusing on the healing of players affected by COVID-19 and those injured,” said PSSI Sec-Gen Yunus.
PSSI said the withdrawal was made by considering the suggestion voiced by Shin Tae-yong. After a meeting with Youth and Sports Minister Zainudin Amali on Thursday, the South Korean coach claimed the team’s conditions were the worst he had ever experienced while handling the Merah Putih squad.
“We are in the worst condition since I took charge of this team,” said Shin Tae-yong at the ministry building, Jakarta, Thursday, Feb. 10.
