National Police Vow to Raise Members' Human Rights Sensitivity

11 February 2022 08:51 WIB

TEMPO.CO, JakartaThe National Police have pledged to increase the human rights consciousness of police officers through education and training.

“I assert the commitment of the Police to first, continue to maintain and carry out the mandate of police reform to be more professional and accountable and uphold human rights,” said the Police Deputy Chief Comr. Gen. Gatot Eddy Pramono on Thursday, Feb. 10.

Gatot made the statement at the international conference on the application of human rights principles which aimed at strengthening police professionalism and accountability. The virtual event was jointly organized by the National Police Commission (Kompolnas), the National Commission on Human Rights (Komnas HAM), Komnas Perempuan, the Indonesian Ombudsman, LPSK, KPAI, and the European Union Embassy to Indonesia in Jakarta.

Gatot said values and principles of the protection of human rights are one of the main pillars of a democratic government system. The principle must be upheld, respected, and protected, he added.

The police, he opined, were fully aware and acknowledged intersecting transition gaps in the leaps of change during the globalization era. On the one hand, it led to security disturbances.

Therefore, the National Police must carry out their authority in realizing security stability. But on the other hand, they must also carry out duties by sticking to corridors that respect human rights. “Since the 1998 reform, respect for human rights has become the country's top priority,” he said.
