TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Maritime Affairs and Fisheries (KKP) Minister Sakti Wahyu Trenggono and Nahdlatul Ulama (NU) chairman KH Yahya Cholil Staquf have inked a memorandum of understanding (MoU) on collective support towards the development programs in the maritime affairs and fisheries sector through the ummah (Muslim community) empowerment at Dome Building, Balikpapan, East Kalimantan, Monday, January 31, 2022.

“The agreement seeks to boost the roles of ummah in supporting the development programs in the maritime affairs and fisheries sector through the empowerment of ummah potential,” the minister said.

The signing of the agreement took place in conjunction with the inauguration of NU board of officials for the 2022-2027 period and the commemoration of NU’s 96th anniversary.

The agreement encompasses the development of advanced fishermen’s villages, aquaculture villages, people’s salt businesses, gender mainstreaming, human resources capacity and characters, and ecological management and sea health education.

The minister said the agreement was an initial step towards a collaboration and synergy between KKP and the nation’s largest Muslim organization, while NU chairman KH Yahya Cholil Staquf hoped the agreement could bring about benefits and welfare to the people of Indonesia.

The event was attended by President Joko “Jokowi” Widodo, Vice President KH Ma’ruf Amin, several state ministers, the East Kalimantan Governor, the East Kalimantan Regional Leadership Communication Forum (Forkopimda), NU representatives from across the country, interfaith figures, and pesantren (Islamic boarding schools) leaders.
