TEMPO.CO, JakartaThe earthquake that jolted Pangandaran, West Java, and its vicinity areas at 11:03 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 27, originated from the Indonesian Ocean south of Java.

“From the megathrust zone,” said Daryono as the coordinator for quake and tsunami mitigation at Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) on Friday, Jan. 28.

The 5.2-magnitude tectonic quake was centered about 130 kilometers south of Pangandaran, precisely at 8.81 degrees south latitude and 108.09 degrees east longitude. “The modeling results show that this quake has no potential for a tsunami,” he informed.

Based on its depth at 42 kilometers, the quake was categorized as a shallow one. “This was triggered by deformation in the Indo-Australian Plate that subducts under the Eurasian Plate,” Daryono said.

Its mechanism was also known to be an oblique normal fault. The tremor was felt in Pangandaran, Cilacap, and Kebumen areas at level III-IV of the Modified Mercalli Intensity (MMI) scale. The lower intensity of shaking was also felt in Tasikmalaya, Banjar, and Ciamis at level III and in Garut at level II.

As of Friday morning, January 28, the BMKG detected zero aftershocks and casualties.
