TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The extreme rainstorm that struck an area in mount Merapi's vicinity within the Sleman Regency on January 27 caused havoc as one resident of the Tegal Arep village fell victim to the lightning strike.
“The lightning struck a tree nearby when the rainstorm happened. [The thunder strike] then hit the house and struck the underground cables at the house,” said Makwan, head of Sleman Regional Disaster Mitigation Agency (BPBD).
The severity of the lightning strike had destroyed objects in a house owned by a local resident, Soeparno. He found three of his car’s tires had deflated, the water pump was damaged, and the electricity also went down.
Fortunately, there were no casualties as Soeparno's family members survived unscathed. The region is currently facing a blackout due to this incident while other regions in Sleman saw dozens of trees unrooted, blocked access roads, damaged residential properties, and disrupted electricity.
