TEMPO.CO, Yogyakarta - Chairman of the Golkar’s campaign team Zainudin Amali rebutted rumors saying that the party would nominate Jakarta Governor Anies Baswedan as a presidential candidate in the 2024 presidential election.
“Until this moment, we have not changed the decision from the national meeting that we will only nominate Airlangga Hartarto as a presidential candidate. That is clear,” said Zainudin in Yogyakarta, Sunday, January 23.
The wild issue arose after the presence of Anies Baswedan at the wedding ceremony of the daughter of Golkar politician Nurdin Halid some time ago.
Zainudin said that the capital owned by Golkar with the 2019 House of Representatives (DPR) parliamentary seats required the party to establish a coalition with other parties to nominate presidential and vice-presidential candidates.
As it owned the second most seats in the House after PDIP with 14.78 percent, Golkar assessed that it has a stronger bargaining position in carrying out presidential candidates even though they must form a coalition.
“So we are carrying out consolidation that will nominate Airlangga as a presidential candidate,” said Zainudin who is also the Minister of Youth and Sports.
