TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Jakarta Legislative Council (DPRD DKI Jakarta) councillor Syarif of the Great Indonesia Movement (Gerindra) Party Faction said the emergence of a group of partisans supporting Jakarta Governor Anies Baswedan to again vie in the 2024 Jakarta gubernatorial race did not necessarily mean Gerindra would again throw its weight behind Anies Baswedan like it did in 2017.

Syarif said the Gerindra Party had already tapped its cadre to run in the 2024 Jakarta regional election.

“To date, Gerindra still thinks that Ariza should run for Jakarta governor,” he told Tempo on Friday, January 21, 2022, referring to the present Jakarta Deputy Governor Ahmad Riza Patria.

However, Syarif said chances remained open that Gerindra would again back Anies Baswedan for the capital’s top seat in the election. “Politics is dynamic, fluid. Very possible,” he said.

He explained there were still two years left for the party to mull over the possibilities to support Anies, and that it was also possible that Gerindra would endorse an Anies Baswedan-Riza Patria ticket for the Jakarta gubernatorial election in 2024.

Earlier, a group of people dubbing themselves as Anies’ Friends declared their support for Anies Baswedan to once again compete in the Jakarta regional election. Group coordinator Zaky Indra Lesmana said while in office Anies Baswedan had successfully transformed the capital into a city that became the pride of Jakartans that was honored at both the national and the global levels.

He added the capital also clinched multiple awards during Anies’ tenure. “Among them is that Anies was declared Transportation Hero in 2021.”
