TEMPO.CO, Tangerang - The Soekarno-Hatta Airport Immigration successfully prevented the departure of 170 illegal Indonesian migrant workers throughout January 1-19, 2022.
“We have prevented 60 people from leaving for Malaysia non-procedurally and 110 people for other countries,” said Andika Pandu Kurniawan as the Head of Immigration Intelligence and Enforcement at the Soekarno-Hatta Immigration Office after a talk show on illegal workers at Terminal 3 Soekarno-Hatta Airport, Thursday, January 20, 2022.
Pandu said hundreds of non-procedural migrant workers were handed over to the Indonesian Migrant Workers Protection Agency (BP2MI) for education and to complete the necessary documents to go abroad.
“To date, we are also cooperating with the Soekarno-Hatta Airport Police to develop several cases that we suspect deserve to be brought to the legal process,” Pandu added.
Immigration officers often encountered difficulties identifying illegal migrant workers as they dressed up like common passengers.
BP2MI Head of Banten Regional Office Joko Purwanto said that since 2021, the agency had prevented nearly 1,500 illegal migrant workers from going abroad.
