TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Lack of calcium has a huge impact on the body. If ignored, it might lead to health problems, from rickets, osteoporosis to spasm.

Calcium deficiency can be caused by poor calcium intake or intolerance to calcium-rich food. For women, hormonal change and certain genetic factors can also affect this condition.

There are a few common signs of calcium deficiency such as dental problems, continuous fatigue, dry skin to a muscle cramp. If you feel that, might want to consider consuming lots of calcium.

"Calcium deficiency mainly is seen in children and adults, which might lead to health issues. As one of the most important minerals, calcium is needed for the bones, teeth, nerves, muscle and heart," said Dr Niranjan Naik, a pathological consultant from India, as quoted from Hindustan Times on Wednesday, January 12.

The deficiency is also called hypocalcemia and can happen to children and adults. The following are signs of calcium deficiency that must be wary of:

- Tingling Sensation

Among the common signs of hypocalcemia, the tingling can be felt on the hands and feet. Every nerve in the body needs calcium, and when it's not fulfilled, it will send off signals.

- Fatigue

Poor calcium levels often resulted in fatigue and make someone unable to perform at their best.

- Cramps

Someone with calcium deficiency might experience muscle difficulties such as cramps, spasms even weakening because the muscles are unable to maintain their functions.

- Seizures

The brain needs optimal levels of calcium to release neurotransmitters, while the muscles need it to contract. Hypocalcemia might lead to seizures because it excites the brain.

- Osteoporosis

Another result of hypocalcemia is osteoporosis, where the mineral density of the bones is declining thus making the bone brittle and increasing risks of broken bones.

- Dry Skin

When the calcium is low, the skin won't be able to maintain its moistness.

- Dental Problems

Numbers of Dental problems may occur with the lack of calcium, such as weak roots, decaying teeth and more because the body will take the calcium from bones and teeth.

- Rickets

Children with a poor calcium intake can have a disorder in their bone growth caused by fragile bones, like dislocated and misplaced bones.
