TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Nutritionists have stated that junk food contains numerous dangerous substances which can lower brain function and even result in dementia. Quoted from Tempo Newspaper, Nutritionist from Bogor Agricultural University (IPB), Fransiska Zakaria explained that junk food contains lots of carbs and fat.

"The body needs other nutritions such as Vitamin, Protein, Fibre and Mineral," said the nutritionist. Fransiska advises only 10% maximum of junk-food consumption from the daily diet.

In an article entitled "How Fast Food Causes Irreversible Brain Decline," the leader of NeuroMaging BrainLab (NIMBL),  Prof. Cherbuin has found concrete evidence of unhealthy diet and lacks exercise for some time might lead to Type 2 Diabetes and brain function decline such as Dementia and shrink the brain's size.

The high level of sugar and fat in junk food can influence the brain. In the article "5 Ways Junk Food Changes the Brain", a neurologist and nutritionist from the School of Health and Biomedical Sciences, Reichelt gave the study result on what happened when consuming junk food.

1. Addiction

The brain has an appraisal system, where it controls when to start and stop action. This system is where the brain determines the taste of a dish. Junk foods can tire the brain thus resulting in more consumption.

To control the urges, the brain has a prefontal cortex which functions to manage what the body wants. Australian researchers have shown that junk food contains more sugar and fat compared to a natural dish, which can damage the hippocampus and result in hunger.

2. Lower Learning Capabilities

As the brain's memory centre, Hippocampus is unable to work well when consuming lots of junk foods. There is a connection between neurons that are continuously responding to our environment, this process is named neuroplasticity and functions for memory making and learning things quickly.

3. Hinder Neuron Regeneration

Neuron regeneration continuously happens in Hippocampus, and the new ones have high neuroplasticity which can be triggered to create a new memory.

Lack of fresh neurons is linked with mental illnesses such as depression. When people feel depressed they often bought junk food and reminisce the sad memories. Therefore, when people feel sad and consume junk food, the new memories created will be that of a sad ones.
