TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Metro Jaya Police on Sunday had completed hosting a legal motorcycle drag race event touted as the “Ancol street race” that police hope will help reduce the number of road accidents caused by underground racing in public streets. The event was held on Sunday, January 16, at a straight road in the Ancol area.
“Accidents from illegal racing tend to be unreported and eventually not logged as they would clean up instead of reporting the accident to us,” said the Metro Jaya Police commissioner Sambodo Purnomo Yogo at the event, Antaranews reported.
He explained there are at least 39 illegal street racing spots within the Metro Jaya’s authority. At certain hours, mainly heading into midnight, these locations would see groups of people closing public roads to be used as drag strips.
"We give them a place to carry out the race in a predetermined place, so their safety is guaranteed," he said.
The police commissioner hopes that Sunday’s official street race will accommodate the underground racing scene and motorcycle enthusiasts who normally would use public streets as their drag course. Participants were required to wear complete motorcycle safety gear in the event as well as obtaining parents’ permission for those aged below 17.
