TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Japan will be donating another batch of Covid-19 vaccines to Indonesia amidst a new rise in cases. The Japanese government plans to ship some 2.72 million doses AstraZeneca vaccines to Indonesia.

In an official release on its website, the Embassy of Japan in Indonesia stated that the donation would be shipped in stages between January 15 and 19.

"Japan will continue to work closely with Indonesia, which is a strategic partner for Japan, to end the Covid-19 pandemic as soon as possible," the press statement said.

In July and October last year, Japan shipped a total 4.15 million doses of vaccines. Thus, the country has donated a total of 6.88 million doses.

Over the past two weeks, Indonesia is experiencing another surge of new infections. On Thursday, January 13, the country logged 793 more cases, raising the total caseload to over 4.26 million since the virus was first detected in the country.

To date, 144,155 Indonesians have lost their lives to Covid-19.
