TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Metro Jaya Police on Wednesday has opened registration for the legalized 'street race' hosted by the police institution aimed to sway youths from racing in public streets in Jakarta and the vicinity. The race itself is scheduled for January 16 and will be held at a makeshift drag strip in North Jakarta.
“We have opened the online registration. The link is at loket.com,” said Metro Jaya Police traffic director Grand Commissioner Sambodo Purnomo Yogo on January 11.
There are a number of requirements that have to be met before someone registers, he said. One of them is the required minimum age of 17 years old to participate while people under the legal driving age must acquire parents' concession.
The Metro Jaya Police will limit the number of participants to 350 racers that will be separated into seven classes that depend on the technical specifications of the motorcycles, such as sportbike two-stroke engines, two-stroke mopeds, four-stroke mopeds, and a Vespa class.
Event organizers have prepared three drag strip lengths to accommodate the various needs of a typical underground street race with an 800-meter track, 500-meter, and 300-meter track.
The Police Commissioner hopes such an event will be able to reduce underground street races and calls for motorcycle riders to use this opportunity to show their talent and skills.
