Jakarta Deputy Talks About Vacant Regional Head Positions Until 2024 Election

12 January 2022 00:11 WIB

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Jakarta deputy governor Ahmad Riza Patria on Tuesday said there is a possibility that echelon 1 state officials outside of the Home Affairs Ministry will be appointed to fill in the vacancies of 110 regional leaders starting from November this year until the simultaneous regional head election (Pilkada) in 2024.

“The Home Affairs Minister will likely appoint candidates from external sources of the Ministry considering internal members are responsible for the daunting task of guarding democracy, legislative election and the regional head elections,” said the deputy governor in a webinar on January 11.

Apart from echelon 1 officials, He said members from National Armed Forces (TNI) and Police who are at the Commissioner General levels could also likely be appointed to fill the vacancies in local governments such as Jakarta, Aceh, or Papua.

Patria then talked about the possibility of the extension of current regional leaders' office term until 2024.

“This is interesting as to whether regional leaders with expiring terms [can be extended until 2024],” said the Jakarta deputy governor.
