TEMPO.CO, JakartaPresident Joko "Jokowi" Widodo asserted that the government would continue to enforce the ban on exports of raw mining goods.

“After nickel, [we will ban] bauxite export. The regulation is being finalized. We are preparing a smelter,” he said as quoted from Bisnis.com, Monday, January 10.

After bauxite, the President also said the government attempted to ban tin and copper exports. “We must be brave!” he remarked.

The government banned nickel ore exports on January 1, 2020, through the Energy and Mineral Resources Ministerial Regulation No. 11 of 2019 inked by then-minister Ignasius Jonan on August 28, 2019.

“It's already been 19 months of the surplus trade balance. Where did that come from? From stopping nickel exports. The figure was recorded at US$20.8 billion. In the past, the nickel ore exports were at least US$2 billion a year, which means this is a very high jump,” the state head explained.

According to him, these policies must be taken since the energy mix must be carried out as soon as possible through new and renewable energy (EBT) projects.

“Everything must be developed so that it (the country’s energy) is not only dependent on coal. Indonesia has great potential,” Jokowi underlined.
