TEMPO.CO, JakartaDjarot S Wisnubroto, a former head of the National Nuclear Energy Agency (BATAN), expressed worries that the safety and security system of the nuclear reactor in Serpong, South Tangerang, would weaken.

The concerns rose following the dismissal of hundreds of honorary workers at the agency following its integration into the National Research and Innovation Agency (BRIN). Djarot said that the honorary staffers recruited in Serpong were locals residents.

“We need local people. Imagine if it (the nuclear power plant) is not supported by the community around Serpong, it can be a challenge itself,” he said in Jakarta, Wednesday, January 5.

He further mentioned that the dismissed honorary staffers worked as security, administration, and cleaning staffers who were hired deliberately as part of the local involvement in the agency.

During the two-month transition from BATAN to BRIN, some of them were re-recruited but had to undergo selection tests. “For example, they must be graduated from high school and others. That's what I'm worried about,” Djarot said.
