TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Corruption Eradication Commission (KPK) has named Bekasi Mayor Rahmat Effendi as a suspect in the alleged bribery case. He is suspected of receiving bribes related to the procurement of goods and services and the auction of positions in the Bekasi city government.
“This is a concern for all of us,” said the commission chairman Firli Bahuri at his office, Jakarta, Thursday, January 6.
The anti-graft body suspected Rahmat of receiving money as compensation in land acquisition for a number of projects carried out by the city government during 2021. One of them was the compensation in land acquisition for building a school.
Firli explained Rahmat allegedly appointed a private party owning lands targeted by the city for the project and asked the latter for a commitment fee. Besides, Rahmat was also suspected of receiving money from a number of city officials as compensation for their positions.
KPK has named a total of nine suspects in this case. Other than Rahmat Effendi, the eight others are four city officials identified as MB, MY, WY, and JL as bribe recipients, as well as AA, LBM, SY, and MS as the bribers. The commission has confiscated Rp5.7 billion from this case, consisting of Rp3 billion in cash and Rp2 billion in bank accounts.
