Govt Opens Juanda Airport as Entry Point for International Travelers

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Indonesian government on Friday officially permitted Surabaya’s Juanda Airport to serve as an entry point for international arrivals. Transportation Minister Budi Karya Sumadi said the initial phase will see three arrival gates operated in the airport as it would help alleviate traffic at Soekarno-Hatta Airport.

“This is meant to reduce congestion at Soekarno-Hatta Airport in Jakarta, which has logged up to 4,500 travelers each day,” said the minister in a statement on Friday, December 31.

Indonesia is predicted to welcome up to 5,000 travelers from January 5-7, including tourists and Indonesian migrant workers.

Budi Karya said with the opening of Juanda Airport there will be four international entry points into Indonesia. The other three are Soekarno Hatta International Airport-Jakarta, Ngurah Rai-Bali, and Sam Ratulangi-Manado.

The government continues to take steps in preventing the entry of the new Omicron COVID-19 variant by anticipating airport overcrowding, preparing PCR tests, and requiring international travelers to undergo 10-14 days quarantine as they land in Indonesia.
