TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) has officially ended the tsunami warning at the East Nusa Tenggara (NTT) after the region was hit by a magnitude 7.4 earthquake on Tuesday, December 14, at 11:20 local times.
The agency has urged the NTT governor to announce it to the island’s residents and assured that they can already return to their homes.
“Up until 13:20 Central Indonesia Time (WITA), or two hours after the earthquake at 11:20 WITA, there was no sea level rise. That means the tsunami early warning is officially over,” said BMKG head Dwikorita Karnawati in the online press conference on December 14.
The tsunami early warning was previously issued following the strong tsunami which was expected to affect coastal regions in NTT such as East Flores, Sikka Island’s northern part, and Lembata Island. The residents were strongly advised to avoid coastal areas or rivers.
The Geospatial Information Agency detected a minor tsunami at Marapokot and Reo with the height of 7 centimeters.
