TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Maritime Affairs and Fisheries Ministry in a press conference on Monday announced that it has seized more than 166 fishing boats that committed illegal fishing within Indonesian borders throughout 2021.
“In 2021, our marine and fisheries resources monitoring (PSDKP) managed to confiscate roughly 166 Indonesian and foreign fishing boats,” said the Ministry’s PSDKP director general, Rear Admiral Adin Nurawaluddin, in a press conference on December 13.
Specifically, the ministry nabbed 114 Indonesian fishing boats and 52 foreign boats that were caught in violation of Indonesian maritime laws. A total of 25 of the foreign boats flew the Vietnamese flag, Antaranews reported.
The PSDKP also investigated 1,672 fishing vessels and handled 212 legal cases which led to 157 if they were tried in a criminal court of law.
“We are committed to imposing zero tolerance towards illegal fishing,” he said, asserting that the PSDKP is the “right hand” of the Maritime Affairs and Fisheries Ministry in terms of law enforcement.
