TEMPO.CO, Yogyakarta - The Yogyakarta city government is optimistic that the slowing down of COVID-19 cases over the past few months will bring a positive tourism trend next year. The government has set a higher target for tourist arrivals in 2022.
Yogyakarta Mayor Haryadi Suyuti said this year’s number of tourist visits exceeded the target of 1 million tourists. Throughout 2021, 1.2 million tourists visited the city. “On this basis, we will increase our target to 1.4 million tourists for next year,” said Haryadi on Sunday, December 12.
Haryadi said there will be various tourism agendas listed in the Jogja 2022 Calendar of Events (CoE) in a bid to boost tourist visits. “We also cooperate with other local governments, such as the Surakarta City Government,” he added.
Yogyakarta Tourism Agency head Wahyu Hendratmoko said the calendar is part of the tourism promotion that provides early information on various events to be held throughout 2022. With the calendar of events, travel agents and tourists can plan their vacation agenda.
Sleman Regent Kustini Sri Purnomo said that as COVID-19 infection is slowing down, the monitoring on the movement of people and tourists must remain under control so as not to trigger new infection clusters. The regency government, for example, anticipated crowds and banned New Year's celebratory parties. “There must be restrictions and regulations in public places.”
