Alert Status for Mount Awu in North Sulawesi Raised to Level II

13 December 2021 07:40 WIB

TEMPO.CO, Sangihe - The Regional Disaster Mitigation Agency of Sangihe Islands Regency, North Sulawesi, confirmed the increase in the status of Mount Awu from level I (normal) to level II (caution). The status hike for the volcano takes effect from Sunday, December 12, at 12:00 Central Indonesian Time (WITA).

“Report about the rising activity of Mount Awu from normal to alert was received from the Geological Agency of the Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources,” said Head of Sangihe BPBD Wandu Labesi in Tahuna of Sangihe Regency, Sunday.

Wandu asserted that the general public is barred from doing activities within a one-kilometer radius of the mountain peak and asked to remain calm. “The public is expected to follow directions from the Sangihe BPBD,” he said.

Mount Awu in Sangihe Island is an active volcano in the northernmost part of Indonesia. Located at an altitude of 1,320 meters above sea level, the volcano last erupted in June 2004. It is the fourth deadliest volcano in Indonesia after Tambora, Krakatau, and Kelud.

Besides Mount Awu, Mount Merapi also showed an increase in volcanic activity on Sunday as it emitted hot clouds as far as two kilometers at 10:18 Western Indonesian Time (WIB).
