TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Attorney General Sanitiar Burhanuddin in a written statement on Tuesday noted that the passing of the Prosecutors Act which oversees the law on wiretapping must be used with extra caution by Attorney General's Office staff.
The law passed by House legislators grants public prosecutors the authority to conduct wiretapping, Antaranews reported.
“Be careful and do not misuse it with authority as this is related to the right to privacy,” Burhanuddin wrote in a statement on December 7. “Through this law, the Attorney General’s Office has a strong legal baseline in conducting wiretapping.”
According to Burhanuddin, wiretapping is not only needed at the investigation stage but also at the stage of prosecution, execution, and the search for fugitives. With this authority, the Adhyaksa Corps will add one center to its structure, namely a monitoring center that will support wiretapping tasks.
He hopes that the new Prosecutors Act will strengthen the position of the prosecutor's office, both in terms of organization and authority. "With the issuance of this new law, I hope we can use every authority that is inherited in us," said Burhanuddin.
