TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Yogyakarta International Airport (YIA Airport) located in the Kulon Progo Regency, Yogyakarta, is arguably one of the majestic entrances to Central Java. Unfortunately, the facilities and brand image built by airport management has been tarnished by a number of crimes occurring recently.
Among the many crimes the Kulon Progo District Police has handled, among them were diamond sale and purchase fraud in September 2021, panel theft, car vandalism, and the latest is an unfortunate viral video of lewd activities conducted in the airport’s parking area on the second floor.
The exhibitionist was arrested by law enforcers on Saturday, December 4, and will be facing charges for pornography.
Kulon Progo Police spokesperson Insp. Nengah Jeffry argues that the status as an international airport should require a special police unit to be placed on duty and patrols in the area. "YIA Airport is quite prone to crime because there are no police officers stationed there," said Nengah Jeffry on December 5.
He compared the YIA to Soekarno-Hatta Airport’s dedicated police unit or aviation security (Avsec).
YIA acting general manager Agus Pandu Purnama lamented the recent crimes committed in the airport area and finds it unfortunate as “the image of the airport that was painstakingly built [but is tarnished] by recent crimes,” he said.
Pandu admitted that there are a number of vulnerable points at YIA Airport prone to crime because of lack of monitoring. "During this pandemic, we did streamline the use of security unit services and many sections were not monitored. We will immediately evaluate this," said Pandu.
