TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Indonesian Ulema Council (MUI) on Wednesday officially terminated one of its members in the management level, Ahmad Zain, after the individual was arrested by the counterterrorism police force (Densus 88).
Densus 88 suspects Zain is involved in a terrorist network. “Ahmad Zain’s status as an MUI management member has been terminated until a permanent legal verdict is made,” said MUI chairperson Miftachul Akhtyar and MUI secretary general Amirsyah Tambunan in a written statement on November 17.
Zain was the organization’s fatwa commission and was nabbed in Bekasi on Monday evening of November 16. Police suspect him of being involved in the local terrorist group Jamaah Islamiyah.
MUI asserts that Zain’s involvement in the terrorist organization has nothing to do with the Islamic organization and was personally motivated. MUI higher-ups make it clear that this issue is being handled completely by law enforcers.
The organization will continue to be committed against terrorism. It urges everyone to honor the ongoing legal proceedings and put forth the presumption of innocence.
