TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Tourism and Creative Economy Minister Sandiaga Uno in his visit to Raja Ampat on Wednesday said that the tourism site located in West Papua has enormous potential to be a high quality tourism, which needs to be preserved. This is the reason he believes Raja Ampat is not compatible with the concept of mass tourism.
“We must understand that Raja Ampat, as a tourist destination, is a high quality type. And surely those with higher quality have an added value or aren't cheap,” said Uno in his visit to the island’s Arborek village on October 27, Antaranews reported.
The Minister is implying that this unique location should have its natural ecosystem preserved for the sake of sustainable tourism and must put forth quality over quantity. He explained the natural beauty of the island he witnessed first hand.
“I dived the beautiful coral reef and this opens job opportunities and economic elevation of the Raja Ampat locals and even West Papua,” he added.
Uno urged the public and local government to maintain this natural preservation as it is the life of sustainable tourism and sustainable economic opportunities for local residents.
