Indonesia With Most Google Content Removal Request; Govt Explains

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Communications and Informatics (Kominfo) Ministry on Tuesday responded to a Google report stating that Indonesia tops the list of countries in the world with the most frequent content removal request.

The transparency report from January to June 2021 ranks Indonesia first and followed by Russia and Kazakhstan.

Kominfo spokesperson Dedy Permadi clarified this and said the government has filed the requests to prevent the spread of contents in violation of Indonesia’s Electronic Transaction and Information Law (ITE Law).

“Requests to drop certain contents are based on public complaints, cyber patrol reports, or requests from State Ministries or organizations,” said Permadi in a text message to Tempo on October 26.

Once the government has deemed the reported contents to violate the law, the platform that manages the electronic systems where the content is publicly accessible will be asked to drop the contents.

However, not every request is followed up by Google as Permadi said it will only be followed up after complaints are certain to be in violation of the ITE Law. Such contents are those considered to disrupt public order.
