TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Ministry of Education, Culture, Research, and Technology through the Bali Language Agency has been compiling a dictionary for Balinese language learners, an official said.

"The scope of words compilation of the Bali-Indonesia learner dictionary is the Balinese vocabulary from school level," Head of the Bali Language Agency Toha Machsum  in a written statement received on Saturday.

According to him, Balinese words have been collected from Balinese teaching books from the elementary, junior high, and high school levels.

In addition, words have been collected from children's stories and Balinese short stories, he informed.

The dictionary is aimed at helping language learners, either when they want to understand speech or text (receptive aspects), or to express thoughts in the form of speech or writing (productive aspects), Machsum said. Both aspects were considered in organizing the learner dictionary, he highlighted.

"In general, the drafting of the Bali-Indonesia learner dictionary can be used as a reference list that explains the meaning of words. Particularly, the dictionary will be useful in helping learners get to know new words, especially Bali-Indonesia language," he added.

The process of compiling the dictionary began by drafting of proposals followed by word searches, he informed. The process was launched on March 24 this year in Tabanan district and on March 25 in Badung district.

After reviewing words, the Bali Provincial Language Agency started data collection in the two districts, Machsum said.

After the data was collected, a team of analysts classified and defined the data, he informed. The last stage was the reporting stage after some necessary revisions, he added.

The dictionary drafting was carried out by a team of Word and Term Analysts appointed by the head of the Bali Provincial Language Agency and a Balinese language elementary teacher, he said.

"We have managed to compile a dictionary of elementary-level Bali-Indonesia learners," he added.
