Police Foil Illegal Trade Of Protected Wildlife In Yogyakarta

23 October 2021 00:32 WIB

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - A joint effort by the Yogyakarta Police and the region's Natural Resources Conservation Agency (BKSDA) successfully foiled an illegal online trade of protected wildlife through Facebook.

"The suspect's whereabouts were known to be from Semarang City (Central Java), which is why we coordinated with the BKSDA to arrest the suspect," said the Yogyakarta Police Criminal Unit Head Commissioner Andhyka Donny Hendrawan on Friday, October 22, 2021.

Andhyka explained that the arrest against the suspect identified as RD was done a week before. The Police managed to confiscate exotic wildlife consisting of seven Javan slow loris (Nycticebus javanicus), one binturong (Arctictis binturong), one Estuary crocodile (Crocodylus porosus), and a 75 centimeter Irian crocodile (Crocodylus novaeguineae).

The protected wildlife are temporarily kept at the Gembira Loka Zoo while the suspect faces criminal charges under Law No.5/1990 on Conservation of Natural Resources and Ecosystems and faces a maximum of 5 years of imprisonment.

Head of the Conservation Section of Region I Yogyakarta, Untung Suripto, said Yogyakarta is the most frequent region with illegal online trade of protected wildlife "But police also managed to uncover most of them," he said.
