TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Strong winds struck residential areas in Sinjai, South Sulawesi in the early hours at 3 a.m. Central Indonesian Time (WITA), Tuesday, October 19. As a result, three houses were severely damaged, one house was slightly damaged, and four families were affected.
“The incident started with high rainfall accompanied by strong winds on Tuesday at 3 a.m.” said the National Disaster Mitigation Agency (BNPB) spokesperson Abdul Muhari in a written statement on Thursday, October 21.
The Sinjai Regional Disaster Mitigation Agency (BPBD) reported that four affected families resided in Bua Village, Tellu Limpoe Regency. Fortunately, there was no report of fatalities.
The BNPB immediately dispatched a team to conduct a quick assessment and coordinate emergency handling. Assistance in the form of staple food was distributed to affected residents. Abdul said the joint team worked to clean up materials that were carried away by the wind.
Based on the BNPB’s platform related to disaster risk dubbed InaRISK, Sinjai Regency had the potential for extreme weather in the moderate to high category. Thus, BNPB called on the public to execute disaster mitigation and increase vigilance to anticipate potential hydrometeorological, “especially during the transition season,” said Abdul.
