TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Indonesia clinched the 2020 Thomas Cup trophy with a 3-0 win over China on Sunday, October 17, held at Ceres Arena, Aarhus, Denmark. President Joko "Jokowi" Widodo extended congratulations to Indonesia's team.
Via his Instagram account, the President posted video footage of the last moment of the match between Jonatan Christie against Li Shi Feng that ensured the trophy for Indonesia.
“The tension in watching the nail-biting 2020 Thomas Cup final tonight was soon taken over by the overwhelming feelings of joy when Jonatan Christie jumped, raised his fist into the air, and screamed in delight at the end of his third game. Indonesia is the champion!” the President wrote.
“The Thomas Cup finally returned to Indonesia after 19 years of waiting,” he added.
Indonesia won the title after Jonatan Christie in the third match managed to beat Li Shi Feng in the rubber game 21-14, 18-21, and 21-14 that lasted for one hour and 21 minutes.
The men’s singles Anthony Sinisuka Ginting started the victory by defeating Lu Guang Zu 18-21, 21-14, and 21-16 in the opening match. The men’s double Fajar Alfian and Muhammad Rian Ardianto secured the 2-0 lead for Indonesia after winning straight games, 21-12 21-19, against He Ji Ting and Zhou Hao Dong.
Thus, Indonesia did not need to play the fourth and fifth matches, the men's doubles Kevin Sanjaya Sukamuljo and Daniel Marthin against Liu Cheng and Wang Yi Lyu and the men's singles Shesar Hiren Rhustavito against Weng Hong Yang as it already secured a 3-0 win
Following Taufik Hidayat’s victory in clinching the title in 2002, Jonatan Christie helped the team to win the 2020 Thomas Cup.
