TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Home Affairs Minister Tito Karnavian asserted that members of the General Election Commission (KPU) and the Election Supervisory Body (Bawaslu) for the 2022-2027 period, must be prepared to face a fairly heavy burden in the year of politics in 2024.
"This may be a new experience for us. And because the workload is quite heavy, of course, it requires Bawaslu and KPU members who are physically and mentally strong under high pressure," said Tito after submitting a copy of the Presidential Decree related to the Selection Committee of KPU and Bawaslu members on Tuesday, October 12, 2021.
Tito said in 2024, there will be a presidential election that will run concurrently with the regional legislative elections. After that, there will be simultaneous regional heads elections held throughout Indonesia except for Yogyakarta and level 2 areas of Jakarta.
"Until we provide creative breakthroughs to make the 2024 General Election and Regional Head Elections more efficient, brief, and prevent prolonged division of society," said Tito.
The minister proposed criteria of candidates for the KPU and Bawaslu members, such as people who could work in a team and collaborate with other institutions yet independently.
The Selection Committee chairman Juri Ardiantoro said his team will soon design a schedule and working plan for the selection team to be submitted to President Joko Widodo. "We have the same commitment to work transparently, partially, and independently," Juri said.
