TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - President Joko “Jokowi” Widodo has signed the Presidential Regulation No.85/2021 on the government work plan (RKP) of 2022 which allocates a Rp510.79 billion budget for Indonesia’s new capital city project in East Kalimantan.
The massive budget will be used to develop the new region where the capital city will reside and reduce disparities and guarantee even distribution of wealth.
Constructing the physical features of the capital city, according to Bappenas Head Suharso Monoarfa, will greatly depend on the development of the current Covid-19 pandemic as the government previously focused the funds to handle the pandemic.
Monoarfa predicts the new capital city will not be able to be built in one grand attempt but will use a realistically gradual process that could take up time for more than a decade.
“These are the steps we are preparing and are in our 2045 masterplan,” he said on September 4.
Apart from pandemic-related adjustments, the construction will still wait for the New Capital City Draft Law (RUU) to be passed, which its earliest draft had been sent via presidential letter to the House of Representatives (DPR) leaders. The project will be commenced as soon as 2022 once the draft law is passed.
