TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Thousands of letters from the supporters of the Corruption Eradication Emergency (KPK) Office were delivered to President Joko Widodo today, September 29. These letters, 1,505 of them, were sent to the State Secretariat in Central Jakarta.
Although the content of the thousands of letters varies, there is one common message, which is a request to undo the dismissal of 57 KPK employees who failed the National Insight Test.
"Another message is to ask President Joko Widodo to pay attention to the people," Arief Maulana from the Jakarta Legal Aid in a written statement.
Ari and six other public representatives were the ones who came to the palace to deliver the letters. Among them were Eni Rohayati and Donris Sianturi, who are the victims of the social assistance corruption case. They also brought a copy of a change.org petition that had 70,503 signatures.
They arrived at the palace gate at noon, carrying signs that said #saveKPK.
The 1,505 letters comprise of 917 sent online and 588 delivered via the KPK Emergency Office, some were hand delivered.
Arief said that there is a growing public support for the KPK Emergency Office. To date, two emergency offices have been established, one in Bandung, one in Central Java.
He said that the establishment of emergency offices "symbolizes the people's disappointment" of President Joko Widodo's administration performance in combating corruption.
"The establishment of emergency offices shows that anti-corruption movements will continue to exist even though the KPK is destroyed," said Arief.
